PleurX Catheter Insertion

(Conditions treated: Ascites; Pleural effusion.)

What is the PleurX system designed for?

PleurX devices are designed specifically for patients with chronic recurrent accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (ascites) or chest (pleural effusion). Many patients with these conditions will undergo repeated drainages which is inconvenient and uncomfortable. A PleurX device remains implanted in the chest or abdomen and allows for intermittent easy drainage of fluid which may be performed at home.

How long will the PleurX catheter remain inserted?

The catheter may remain in place until the fluid stops draining. In cases where fluid build-up doesn’t or is unlikely to stop the catheter may remain present for as long as required.

How will the PleurX insertion impact my lifestyle?

The PleurX system is designed to allow patients to drain their fluid from home and minimize time spent in hospital. With appropriate dressings you will be able to shower, however immersing yourself in water such as with bathing or swimming is not recommended.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is performed under sedation and with local anaesthetic. Under ultrasound guidance the PleurX catheter is introduced into the space in which the fluid accumulates and tunneled for a short distance under the skin.

Is the procedure painful?

This is a very well tolerated procedure with a minor amount of discomfort. It is usually completed within 15 minutes.

Can the PleurX catheter be easily removed?

Yes, the catheter can be easily removed. The PleurX system is extremely similar to tunneled vascular catheters such as permacaths, which are designed to be removed. This requires a short procedure under sedation and local anaesthetic. In the majority of cases no further incisions are required.

What happens after the procedure?

You may be discharged two hours after the procedure. You cannot drive for 24 hours as you have been sedated. We recommend spending the rest of the day and evening with you. You will provided with instructions on managing and post procedural pain you may experience.
